EAS 375 Lecture questions 1 – Introduction 1. What is meant by growth? -Expansion of supply and demand of products that forms the foundation of our society. 2. Who was Thomas Malthus and what idea did he formulate about resource use versus population growth? - Thomas Malthus published “Essay on the principle of Populations”. - Competition for resources will lead to war, famine and disease which resulting nation against nation. Only the strongest nations would survive. 3. What role does population growth mean to our use of energy? - Increasing population growth will affect the needs of fossil fuel for energy which is very important to the society for transportation, food production, production of electricity and products used in everyday activities.

What is Jarvon’s Paradox?-Technological progress that increased a resource efficiency will increase the rate of consumption of that resourse. 5. What is the difference between political and energy time?-Political time = 2,4, 5 year cycles (next election)-Energy time = Decade cycle (long term planning and building) 6. Why is the media so inept at reporting energy news?-Because media tend to be alarmists. If it does not fit in 30 second sound bite (brief statement), there is a good chance it will not be covered. If an idea does not conform to the media bias, it will be frequently ignored....
