First Test in Biology for Grade 9 Parts of a cell (know the function of each and how to label a cell) Nucleus: Found in both plant and animal cells Control center or “brain” of the cell, Directs all of the cells activities. Nucleolus: Found in both animal and plant cells Important for processing ribosomes nuclear membrane: Found in both plant and animal cells Gatekeeper of the nucleus Controls what leaves and enters the nucleus Cytoplasm: Found in both plant and animal cells Watery fluid throughout the entire cell Stores wastes Allows transport between structures in the cell Vacuole: Found in both plant and animal cells Very small in animal cells but big in plant cells Stores water and nutrients Chloroplasts: Fund in only plant cells Contains chlorophyll, allows plant to make its own food. Mitochondria: Found in both plant and animal cells “Power House” of the cells Provides energy to the cells Ribosomes: Found in both plant and animal cells Produces protein SER Found in both plant and animal cells Carries materials through the cytoplasm Transports materials from inside the cell to outside the cell RER Found in both plant and animal cells Has ribosomes attached to it Transports materials from inside the cell to outside the cell Golgi apparatus Found in both plant and animal cells Stores and packages proteins Lysosomes Found in both plant and animal cells “Suicide Sacs” Break down molecules Kills and digests invading organisms Cell Membrane Found in both plant and animal cells “Gate Keeper” Controls what leaves and enters the cell Cell Wall Only found in plant cells Protects and support the plant cell Provides shape for the plant cell Centriole Only found in animal cells
