I have always liked to read. That’s why I signed up for this class, HU 142. But I had a very limited scope of genres I liked to read. I mostly just enjoyed reading the classic novels that I was assigned to read in high school. Huck Finn, The Great Gatsby, and many others became some of my favorites. Even later in high school, I was introduced to some plays like Macbeth and Hamlet, but I didn’t realize that plays were some of my favorite writings as well. Throughout the semester in HU 142: Themes in Literature, I reestablished a love for reading, and broadened my scope. I never would have read poetry on my own. I remember being a junior in high school and hating poetry. I didn’t understand it. I couldn’t read it. And when I was tested on it, I did very poorly. But thanks to this class, I finally learned the steps of properly reading poetry and understood a few poems. “The Jilting of Granny Witherall” was my favorite. Not only was it nice that I could understand what the author wanted to convey, but I could actually see mental images that he was displaying. Poetry wasn’t the only genre I learned to love in this class. In my senior year of high school, my English class was called “British Lit”. We read Shakespearian dramas. While I kind of enjoyed Shakespeare’s plays (after someone explained to me line by line what everything meant), Shakespeare is a hard writer to read first for plays. When this semester began, the first thing we read were plays. I instantly fell back in love with reading when I read Antigone. I’ve always loved dramas, and with the play format, It seemed so
