Krajec Anna Krajec Dustin Hogan / Dr. Moore Christian Formation 9/24/11 Interpretation and Context The Bible gets played with a lot. Entire sermons—even denominations—can become fixated on a single verse or passage of scripture, letting it govern them entirely. It is not uncommon to find the Bible being used as a weapon, with grossly misinterpreted text being thrown another’s way. Some verses read outright might convince a reader that they do not want to believe in the God described. What each of these—and other—interpretations lack is an emphasis on context. Indeed, if parts of Scripture are read without it, the Bible can seem off- putting. Enter context, and prepare for an entirely new understanding. Such is true for the subject of the behavior of women in comparison to men, as in Ephesians 5:22-24 and 1 Timothy 2:11-13. More study into these passages reveals the true meaning Paul intended and the different applications they might have to Christians today. Consider reading Ephesians 5:22-24 alone and without knowledge of Paul, his mission, or the circumstance he is addressing in Ephesus. “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior” (NIV). The husband, then, is Christ in the household, the Savior. Wives should be willing to submit to anything their husband says or asks them to do—that is what Scripture says, is it not? Wives should fully surrender to their husbands
