A 1999 study shows US Students in the grade rank 19 th in math, 18 th in science. This puts U.S. in a similar league as Bulgaria and New Zealand and significantly below Canada and numerous countries in Asia. Criticism Conflict/Power: Too much empasis on the “Hidden Curriculum” (busy work, discipline for discipline sake) 1. Rigid Uniformity 2. Numerical Ratings 3. Rigid Expectations 4. Specialization 5. Little Individual Responsibility. Too Little Funding Education Spending in VA (2001) VA is the 15 th wealthiest state; but ranks 45 th in support for public education. If those two numbers are put together, we are 48 th in spending in percentage of income. VA teacher’s average salary is $38,690; $2500 below national average.
