Monday, October 18, 2010 Lecture 22 Announcements: Homework for this week's lectures as in LG for 10/22 and10/25, PLUS PyMOL assignment #7 Carbohydrates End of today's lecture: info about the midterm exam Office hours and review sessions this week will be in the usual rooms at the usual times, except that the prof’s office hours on Thursday 10/21 will run from 8AM - noon. Interesting talk on Thursday: The Politics of Integrating Medicine: China and the U.S. in Comparative Perspective, TJ Hindrichs Thursday 10/21 at 4:45PM in Goldwin Smith 142 Final exam on 12/13. There will be a make-up final exam at a date AFTER the regularly scheduled exam. There will not be any "special" final exam for this course prior to 12/13, so do not ask for this. And if you know that you have a conflict on this date, there will be a make-up final exam, about which arrangements will be discussed when the dates draws near. Friday's lecture: Biomembranes: . membrane proteins . membrane fusion Today’s lecture Now we have all the tools of enzymology, and the basics of biomembrane function, for understanding control of metabolism. Soon, we will be starting the discussion of energy metabolism with the carbohydrate glucose. So first, let’s discuss carbohydrates, p. 159. Goals of this discussion of carbohydrates: . Carbohydrate terminology . Carbohydrate structure . Carbohydrate types . Carbohydrate roles See the text pages 235-244 and learn the nomenclature, stereochemistry and conventions. You must learn this without lecture assistance. The lectures will focus on interesting chemistry and structures. A main point in looking at carbohydrate structures is to see the great variety of small differences in the structures. A beginning biochemistry student studies these tiny

variations and thinks, "so what?". But an enzyme can recognize even the tiniest such variation and bind it selectively. The huge variety of structures of carbohydrates makes this class of biomolecules different from proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. Each type of biomolecule has its own "rules" and special properties, and variety is one of the keys for carbohydrates. At the top of page 159 is D-Ribose in Fischer projection form. This is the linear form. The linear form accounts for much less than 1% of all forms found. One of the C in a monosaccharide has an aldehyde or ketone group. This is a general feature for monosaccharides. The first chemical reaction to note is one you studied in organic chemistry: hemiacetal (or acetal) formation. In a saccharide, the carbonyl carbon will be attacked by one of the hydroxyl groups to form the ring. Remember that around a single bond, there is rotation.
