Engl106 Unit 2 DB Cheri Bolin June 14, 2011 I have chosen to habeas corpus as my definition essay. I have never heard of the phrase nor the definition of habeas corpus either. “Habeas Corpus means “you should have the body ”. It is defined as writ directed by a judge to an individual who has detained another individual, commanding him to bring the body of the person in his custody at a specified time to a specified place for a specified purpose. The sole function of the writ is to release an individual from unlawful imprisonment, also known as the great writ of liberty. The writ cannot decide whether the individual is guilty but rather than if the prisoner has been accorded due processes. In present day a writ is to appeal state criminal convictions to the federal courts when requested on behalf of a petitioner who feels that state procedures have violated his/her constitutional rights.” (Ex.
