Safety in Automotive Engineering Engineers in the Automotive Industry face a variety of regulations and necessities which must be encountered and compensated for in the design and building of today’s autos. Aside from meeting the consumers’ various wants for comfort, style, environmental soundness and speed, a major project that the whole industry is entering into is the safety era. The topic of safety in the Automotive Industry encompasses a variety of topics such as personal restraint, child safety, collision protection, and ethical engineering. Today’s autos feature a variety of engineered safety components such as lap belts and shoulder belts. The lap and shoulder belts commonly referred to as seat belts are engineered to give as much comfort as possible while retaining the ability to keep the motorist and passengers in their seats in the event of an accident or other violent movement in a car. The belts in today’s cars are almost usually fully adjustable to add comfort to a wide range of sizes of people. A major problem with the belt system is that people simply do not use them despite their safety benefits and fines from the police for not wearing them. To get around this problem some companies have designed cars with shoulder belts that engage on a passenger when the door is closed. Engineers are also constantly attempting to enhance child safety while in vehicles. Engineering for child safety is always a task because it is hard to imagine what could happen to a child until it has already happened. Some of the engineered innovations in child safety are: child safety seats which keep infants restrained for periods of driving in autos, passenger airbag disengagement functions which prevent the powerful airbag blast from injuring children in collisions, child safety locks which prevent children from opening doors while the car is in motion, rear windows that do not completely roll down to stop children from climbing out of the auto, and window switches with different movements engineered to keep children from becoming lodged in a window. All of these features prevent serious injury from occurring in most cases where they are utilized. Preventing injury is directly correlated with the design and manufacturing engineer’s responsibility to provide safety in today’s autos. Another one of today’s major concerns in the Automotive Industry is collision safety. Engineering a car to provide maximum safety to all persons involved in an auto collision is a feat in itself. There are two main strategies involved in collision safety, keep passengers away from things in the car and keep the things in the car away from the passengers. This is accomplished now by using multi air-bag systems which rapidly expand on contact during a collision in order to keep the passengers away from the windows and
