Introduction: An overview In this complex world in which we live, engineers play an important role. They design various things that make our lives much easier. Every day we use designs such as bridges, buildings, highways, machinery and automobiles. The engineering profession is very important to society and will always exist. To become an Engineer you must go to school to get educated on the profession, and like any other profession, you should be licensed to practice the work. The job requires responsibility and as an engineer, you are required to prepare engineering reports and/or plans. Practicing without a license can be very dangerous, and could put many lives in danger. A license in engineering is something that should be mandatory in order to safeguard the health, welfare, and safety of the public, as well as one’s career. When you complete the licensing process, you are known as a professional engineer, much as a medical doctor is required to have a medical license to practice medical work. The Professionally Licensed Engineer, known as a PE has proven to a governing body that he is competent in his training and can safely and ethically apply that knowledge to an engineering problem. The license shows to people and companies outside the field that you can successfully complete a project assigned. Deborah Grubbe, a chemical engineer thinks this about being license; "Ethics is an important aspect of professional licenser. Obtaining a PE (license) registration not only targets technical competence, but also requires a clear understanding of both ethics and professionalism. Ethics is essential to one's personal reputation, and once compromised, can almost never be reclaimed. Personal credibility becomes even more important when working outside the United States." Chemical engineer, Lori Hasselbring, said, "I finished 10 years of college pursuing my Ph.D. in chemical engineering and got a great job at Philips 66 3
