Section 5.4 Right Triangle Trigonometry In this section, we consider properties of cofuntions and review some trigonometric methods. Definition. Two acute angles are complementary if the sum of the two angles is 90 o . Cofunctions. If α and β are complementary angles then sin β =cos α tan β =cot α sec β =csc α Example. cot( π 12 )=tan( π 2 - π 12 )=tan( 5 π 12 ) Example. csc( π 3 ) = sec( π 2 - π 3 ) = sec( π 6 ) Example. Find the exact value of cos(90 o - θ ), if sin θ = 1 3 and θ is acute. Solution. Since 90 o - θ is complementary to θ , cos(90 o - θ )=sin θ = 1 3 Example. Find the exact value of tan 12 o - cot 78 o . Solution. tan 12 o - cot 78 o = cot 78 o - cot 78 o =0. Example. Find cot 40 o - sin 50 o sin 40 o . Solution. cot 40 o - sin 50 o sin 40 o = cot 40 o - cos 40 o sin 40 o = cot 40 o - cot 40 o =0 Example. Find the exact value of sin θ ,i fsec θ =3and0 <θ< π 2 .
