Lecture 3: September 19/09 What is the perceptual world in the first four monts of life ? - Newborn baby: - 2-month-old - 4-month old What do these babies taste, smell, hear , and see? Taste: Adult taste organized Around 4 dimensions - Bitter - Sour - Salty - Sweet Taste in newborns - Facial reactions to sweet, sour, and bitter tastes in 2-hour olds. - No distinct facial expressions for salty taste. Different areas of the tongue are responsible for different tastes. Smell: Smell discrimination in 3 to 5 day olds Foul smells from pleasant smells are differentiated at an early age. - Response to chemical composition of gases - Adults can discriminate up to 10,000 different chemical substances Smell memory in newborns !! - Can 3 to 5 day old neonates discriminate mom’s Amniotic Fluid (AF) from unfamiliar AF? - Like asking whether discriminate smell of your moms mac and cheese from the beighbours max and cheese.
