Lecture 13 With rare exceptions each type of receptor is specialized to respond preferentially to only one type of stimulus energy, called the adequate stimulus: Rods and cones in the eye respond to light Nerve endings in the skin to touch, pressure, or vibration, Receptors in the tongue to chemical tastants. The stimulus is always converted, or transduced, to an electrical signal, the receptor potential. - for sensory signals there is a great deal of amplification at the receptor level, so that very small external stimuli provide a trigger to release stored charges that appear as electrical potentials - sensory receptors have a well difined range of stimuli to which they respond, tuned to the certain needs of the organism Stimulus coding by mechanoreceptors- Short and long receptors - in some receptors such as rods and cones in the retina that don’t have long axons, receptor potentials spread passively from the sensory region to the synaptic region of the cell, know an short receptors -
