Phil 186 TuTh 9-10:15 Lisa Bernasconi 2/24/11 Critical Response Paper As a utilitarian, George should take the job as a researcher of chemical and biological warfare. In utilitarianism, only consequences matter where right and wrong depend on one’s actions for everyone who might be affected by the person’s decision. First of all, he must figure out which action will produce the most happiness. In this case, George will provide a better life for his family and who could slow down the research of chemical and biological warfare if he takes the job. If he chooses not to take the job, he may not be able to find work with a decent pay. Then his wife will have to continue to work, which will still have a damaging effect on their children. Also, another person around his age would take the job and pursue the research with more passion and desire. This person will likely speed up the process of chemical and biological welfare and cause more detrimental effects on those who would be affected. Because George despises chemical and biological warfare, this is not good.
