English 200 Sarah Baker 11/26/08 Second Proposal (The Golden Gate Bridge) Since its completion in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge has remained a marvelous architectural structure and an important aspect to the citizens of San Francisco and the North Bay. However, the bridge's beauty came at an expense. Joseph Strauss was the person who thought of the idea of building a bridge to relieve the increasing congestion in San Francisco and to bring hopes of economic rising during the period of the Great Depression. Through his persistence and certain “payoffs”, the bridge was finally completed after 18 years of struggling. The image of San Francisco would never be the same. An important source for my presentation is the documentary film is American Experience: The Golden Gate Bridge . This documentary tells of the history behind the bridge, the main people who were involved, and the social and economic problems that came along with the development. This film gives an important quote by Strauss after the completion, “The Golden Gate Bridge, the
