Germ 433 – A. O’Brien Kapitelgruppe 3-2 (pp. 141) Nouns – Pronouns- da-Compounds Notes – Übung TEXT: Sprachenvielfalt (p.142) annotated below Pronouns You have been introduced to the nominative personal pronouns in Kapitelgruppe1, Chapter 5 when we analysed verbs in the present tense. Like nouns, the pronouns have cases depending on their function in a sentence. The chart below is showing you all the pronouns at a glance: Focus on the third person pronouns singular and plural– you will encounter them more often in written texts. There are two things, which are helpful to know about personal pronouns: Third person pronouns agree in gender and in number with the people or things they represent: der Vertrag (the contract) is masculine, therefore it is “ er” ["he"] or any other corresponding form [ ihn, ihm ]), die Politik is feminine, therefore it is “ sie” [“she”] or any other corresponding form [sie, ihr] ), das Ereignis (the event) is neuter, therefore it is “es” [“it”] or any other corresponding form [ es, ihm ], die Länder (the countries) is plural, therefore it is “sie” [“they”] or any other corresponding form [ sie, ihnen ]. Genitive personal pronouns are rarely used. 1

Man is an easy one because it exists only in the singular nominative case. While in English, you ( du, ihr ) is often used as a very general pronoun (You are never alone), this is generally not done in German. 2
