O’Brien Kapitelgruppe 3-3 (pp. 155) Modal verbs and Separable Prefix verbs Notes – Übungen TEXT: Schulen in Deutschland (p. 157) annotated below Modal verbs (modal auxiliaries) Modal verbs are very essential; they indicate under what conditions a particular action is performed. In the example, the student can attend the Fachhochschule, can tells us that there is the possibility for the student to attend a specific type of school (if – for example - he/she has finished the Realschule or the Gymnasium before). You have already seen that German, too, has modal verbs , and that they are used in much the same manner as their English counterparts. Below is a list of German modal verbs. Since they are used frequently, it is advisable to learn them. Note that the modal verbs “ können”, “müssen”, “dürfen”, “wollen” and “mögen” exhibit the stem vowel change for all o the singular forms. Also, the er/sie/es form do not have an ending.
