Reflexives in English are used very frequently, for example when we say I hurt myself. Whenever an action is carried out on the doer of the action, it is termed reflexive . The myself, himself, herself, etc. forms are English reflexives. For the most part, German does not use 1

special forms, it uses the pronouns we have dealt with in chapter 2 of this chapter group. Thus, ich frage mich literally means I ask me. Since the mich refers back to ich, the statement is said to be reflexive. Other pronouns work in a similar fashion, thus we get du fragst dich, wir fragen uns, and ihr fragt euch. Things are different when we deal with third person reflexives. The expression er fragt ihn is not reflexive, as the subject and object are not considered the same person. What is necessary is a third person form that ensures agreement between the doer of the action and the recipient. The third person form sich is a special form, which refers to masculine, feminine, neuter and plural forms. In this fashion we derive expressions such as er fragt sich, sie fragt sich, sie fragen sich, etc. Reflexive Pronouns
