In chapter 4 of chapter group 4, you were introduced to Passiv forms. The auxiliary verb werden plus a past participle form the German passive. You are familiar with the passive voice in version A. of the sentences below. We can modify a passive voice statement with a modal verb like any statement in active voice. See set B of the examples. A. Die Gesetze werden nicht immer befolgt. Laws are not always followed. B. Die Gesetze müssen immer befolgt werden . Laws must always be followed. A . Die Hausaufgaben werden von den Studenten regelmäßig gemacht. B. Die Hausaufgaben müssen Studenten regelmäßig gemacht werden . Homework must done regularly by students. A. Der Wagen wird sofort vom Monteur repariert. B . Der Wagen kann sofort vom Monteur repariert werden . The car can be immediately repaired 1

by the mechanic From the word order you see that the modal verb is the conjugated verb in the second position of the main clause with the infinitive of werden at the end. Modal verbs and passive forms im Präteritum To express the same idea in Präteritum you only have to put the modal verb in Präteritum . A. Die Gesetze wurden nicht immer befolgt. Laws were not always followed. B . Die Gesetze mussten immer befolgt werden. Laws had always to be followed. A. Die Hausaufgaben wurden von den Studenten regelmäßig gemacht. B.
