Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils 1. Introduction ± Course Text Soil Mechanics for Unsaturated Soils by D. G. Fredlund and H. Rahardjo ± Course Description Course emphasizes topics related to the mechanics of unsaturated soils with some applications to the soil mechanics for unsaturated soils (See course syllabus) . ± Why Unsaturated Soils? A major distinction that is made between saturated and unsaturated soils is the negative pore pressures that develop in unsaturated soils (See Fig. 1) . This course will discuss the mechanics of unsaturated soils looking at the pore pressures that develop in unsaturated soils and how the pore pressures affect soil properties and the resulting soil behavior.
