Vanessa Reapor English 145, Section 42 June 3, 2009 Essay #3 Analysis of Argument in Literature Outline—Mr. Sumarsono INTRODUCTION: Exordium: “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” quote learned from childhood. Narratio: Kate, narrator from Trenton, New Jersey. Family is hosting an Indonesian Diplomat from United Nations. Divisio: Through the use of a plot, characters, setting and imagery, Robinson is able to illustrate the importance of intellectual empathy. BODY: P1 Statement: Susan, the narrator, is embarrassed and annoyed by her mother’s uncharacteristic actions during Mr. Sumarsono’s visit. Evidence: o Mother shouting for Mr. Sumarsono at train station o Mother asking questions during the car ride and lunch time o Mother not allowing Kate and Susan to skip lunch o Dinner: mother wearing pink dress, dining room, using white plates with gold rims, wingeglasses, bathed Explanation: Since Susan lacks breadth, she is unable to see her mother’s genuine intentions.
