Read Aristotle: politics Epicurus vs Epictetus Notes When Aristotle was writing all the power was in the polis. Epicurus writes when polis has no power. And alexander brings about Hellenism o Problem with identity among Greeks Role of philosophy o Aim of life is pleasure o We have both mental pleasure and pains. Believed mental was worse o Philo is important it can rid us of both Physical through making better decisions Help avoid 2 main mental causes: gods and fear of death Metaphysics of Epicurus o Atomist 2 types of things that exist: atoms and the void Atoms and the void are eternal Infinite number of atoms and the void is infinite o About atoms: Have different shapes, sizes, and weights Too small to be sensed Fall downward through the void Things are temporary conglomerations of atoms that have hooked together Only certain atoms can connect with one another o Indeterminism Ultimately things are determined by chance Generally determine by laws which atoms combine
