Determine the inertia tensor for the ammonia molecule about its center of mass. Determine the principal axes. The ammonia molecule (NH 3 ) is made up of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms arranged in a pyramidical shape with the nitrogen at the apex and the three hydrogens forming an equilateral triangular base. The distance between the hydrogen atoms and the nitrogen atom is 1.03 ˚ A and the angles between the bonds are 36 . 4 and 107 . 2 . Problem 3. The disk illustrated in the figure is spun up to an angular velocity ω , while the strong, light axle on which it is mounted is constrained to remain fixed in direction (of ω , of course). Suddenly the axle is released and system (disk plus axle) is free to wobble. α be the angle between the axis and a line perpendicular to the plane of the disk. Determine the half angle β of the cone in space described by the axis. This problem is similar to the problem of the wobble of the Earth considered in the text.
