Alex Garner Mrs. Grosso English IV 28 January 2010 Out from the Darkness Came a Man, Named Macbeth In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth , wretched and fatal decisions are made without thinking as the dark character hidden within Macbeth is exposed as he becomes one of the most corrupt hero’s in English literature. Some of the most heinous acts of the play, involving murder and acts of sorcery all take place under the cover of night. Darkness plays a pivotal role in the progress of the plot as well. By the end of the play, Macbeth has completely transformed from a noble general into that of a blood thirsty, mindless, killing machine as a result of his blind ambition and self-injustification. The reader encounters the evil forces of nature during the first appearance of the three witches; the main source of evil within the play Macbeth. When the witches are performing their chants in Act I Scene I, the obscurity of the woods encompasses them, "Thunder and lightning, Enter three witches" (301.). This displays their evil nature as they are followed by stormy conditions in the dark. "Fair is foul and foul is fair; Hover through the fog and filthy air" (301). Here the reader is exposed to another account of the foul and sinister atmosphere perpetrating the witches. Later on, towards the end of Hecate’s, queen of witches, speech, she says "Hark! I am called. My little spirit, see: Sits a foggy cloud and it stays for me." This
