Synthesis of Zinc Iodide Jessica Edwards Chem 104 Section 30 Performed: 9/4/2007 Submitted: 9/11/2007 Abstract: The objective of the experiment was to determine the formula of zinc iodide and properly figure out the percent yield of zinc and iodine. The percent yields were as follows; Iodine 68.5% and Zinc 52.9%. We were unsuccessful with keeping all 0.5 g of zinc and iodine although we did sustain most of it. Introduction:

The experimental objective of this experiment is to react iodine with an excess of zinc to make zinc iodine, measure the amounts of zinc and iodine reacted, and isolate and weigh the zinc iodide product. More objectives include, determining the apparent formula for zinc iodide and determine the percent yields for the reaction. To perform the experiment several steps are to be in order. Obtaining both 0.5 grams of iodine and 0.5 grams of zinc are the first steps. Then they will be mixed with 2 ml of distilled water and four drops of 2 M acetic acid to create a new solution.
