Exam 1: Question 1-Discuss the Law of Retribution in Inferno (that is, the relationship between the sin and its consequences in the after-life) Throughout the poem, Dante uses the concept of Law of Retribution for the soul’s location and eternal suffering in Hell. The concept parallels the souls’ committed sins done in their lifetime to the punishment they must face in Hell. Through this, the souls forever remember their sins and face the consequences for eternity. Dante’s visional journey has portrayed Hell to warn the sinners the suffering expected when a sin is committed and not repented. Sinners, located in Canto V, give in to their sexual desires of lust and are pulled into a violent storm causing great pain and anguish. The storm represents the sinner’s feelings before death and now in Hell the storm takes a physical form. Among the souls in the storm are two souls joined together, Francesca and Paolo.
