Daniel Kelleher Dr. Goodwin BHAN 231 Depression “A lot of people don't realize that depression is an illness. I don't wish it on anyone, but if they would know how it feels, I swear they would think twice before they just shrug it.” Jonathan Davis stated this quote to illustrate his belief that depression should be taken more seriously as a medical condition. He also believes that one who has not experienced depression does not understand the true devastation the condition can have on someone’s life. Depression is a serious medical condition that calls for the allotment of more school and community resources. Depression is defined as a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal; sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason. Depression is an illness that has no prejudice and can affect anyone at any given time. In a recent study, it was estimated that 38 million U.S. adults have experienced depression at some point during their lifetime. The number 38 million is alarmingly high and speaks volumes about how depression is truly a silent epidemic that is sweeping across the nation. Depression treats all people equally and therefore affects men and women of all ages, races, and economic levels. However studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between major depression and hereditary traits within a family. Also, psychiatrists assume depression is related to genetics and changes to levels of chemicals in the brain such as serotonin and norepinephrine. Startling information recently reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services show that as many as 1 in every
