One digestive disorder that I have some knowledge of is called Crohn’s Disease. I have a very good friend who suffers from this disorder. It has impacted her life in a very difficult way. Because she is unable to control when the flare-ups will occur or for how long they will last, she has had a very hard time maintaining employment. Crohn’s causes ulcerations of the small and large intestines. While it primarily affects the intestines, it can affect any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus. The ulcerations lead to scarring and stiffening of the intestines, which lead to narrowing of the digestive tract, then ultimately to complete obstruction. When an obstruction occurs, the symptoms can include severe abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distention. There is no clear cut remedy for sufferers of Crohn’s. Some relief can come from surgery to remove portions of the damaged digestive tract. Careful watch over the types of food one consumes may help short term, but are not effective as a long term
