Physics Exam Review Significant Figures: When reporting a measured value, and then doing math operations with the #s, it is important to recognize that not all of the number of a calculator reading of measurement will be meaningful or significant Rule 1- When adding or subtracting, we need to revert to the precision of the least precise by decimal place. Rule 2- When multiplying or dividing any set of numbers the product or quotient will contain the same number of sig figs as the least number of significant figures Magnitude: Log 4,200,000 = 6.623 = 10 7 Uncertainty: due to limitations of the measuring device and the experimenter’s ability to use the device; two factors contribute to uncertainty, precision and accuracy Precision: refers to variation in results obtained when an experiment is repeatedly performed with the same equipment and the same procedure, thus for an experiment to be precise it must show consistency Accuracy: near known or targeted value The Accumulation of Errors in Calculated Results
