Michael Wenstrup Wenstrup 1 Mrs. Ann Dunayczan Character Analysis The Crucible 19 October 2009 A Plethora of Lies To all stories comes an antagonist, in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is definitely the antagonist behind almost all the problems within the story. In The Crucible , a interpretation of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, Abigail is the niece of Reverend Parris, the head of the town in which is devoted to religious beliefs. Ironically Abigail is the instigator and culprit who leads the false accusations of witchcraft throughout Salem. Like most antagonists, Abigail throughout The Crucible contains negative characteristics such as sexual desire, the longing to be in control, and manipulation. Abigail shows the characteristic of sexual desire many times throughout The Crucible . One example of when Abigail shows sexual desire occurs when she had an affair with John. This shows the usual teen girl affection for man with a well respected stature such as John Proctor. Another example occurs Abigail tries to seduce John Proctor outside of the Proctor’s house.
