Unformatted text preview: Homework 2. phys309, Spring 2010 distributed: Jan, 27 2010 due: Mon, Feb. 8 2010 Combination of the lowpass and highpass filters C R R C 1 1 2 2 E Figure 1: Graph In this problem you will study the circuit shown in the figure. As discussed in the lecture 2, this is a combination of the highpass and lowpass filters. The problem is to express the voltage V 2 ( ω ) across the capacitor C 2 as a function of the e.m.f. E , the resistances R 1 , 2 and the capacitances C 1 , 2 . In the lecture notes we discussed an approximate solution, a product of the transmissions of the first and second filters: V 2 ≈ E r ‡ 1 + 1 ( ωR 1 C 1 ) 2 · (1 + ( ωR 2 C 2 ) 2 ) Here you have to find the exact formula. After you do this, plot the approximate and the exact expressions for V 2 ( ω ) /E for the following parameter sets (a) R 1 = 10, C 1 = 10, R 2 = 1, C 2 = 1 and (b) R 1 = 10, C 1 = 10, R 2 = 0 . 1, C 2 = 10 Note that the products R 1 C 1 and R 2 C 2 that determine the characteristic frequencies of the filters are the...
