After days of experimentation, Edison and his team had a device that could play back  well-formed sounds. The Menlo Park facility was besieged by the media and on-lookers,  all eager to get a glimpse of the new invention. Despite the initial excitement, few people  saw a practical use for the phonograph, and it did not become a household staple for  many years. Edison himself did not recognize the market potential of the device until  competitors showed him, and he sold his rights to the Edison Speaking Phonograph  Company in January 1878. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
