(30 pts) A new type of solar cell is being developed, called the dye sensitized solar cell, or DSSC. The figure below shows a schematic of the device. It consists of a layer of TiO 2 particles coated with a dye that is immersed in a liquid electrolyte with I - /I 3 - in the solution. In this solar cell, the dye absorbs the light, then excited electrons are transferred to the left in the diagram shown below to the TiO 2 layer and holes are transferred to the right via the electrolyte and to the Pt-coated glass electrode. (A) TiO 2 is a semiconductor with a band gap of 3.1 eV. In this solar cell, does the TiO 2 absorb much of the incident sunlight? [Also explain your answer]: Answer: ____________________ (B) The I - /I 3 - redox couple in the electrolyte is there to provide electrons to the dye after the dye gives its photo- excited electrons to the TiO 2 layer. However, it is very corrosive and can even corrode Pt (which is one of the noblest (and least susceptible to oxidation) metals.
