Lucia Lee Ali Ahktar April 19, 2011 Mantle of the Prophet Chapter 9 Analysis In Chapter 9 of Mantle of the Prophet, the idea of acceptance is shown throughout the chapter. For example, in the beginning of Chapter 9, one can analyze and infer that Ali has problems trying to adjust his personality so that others can accept him. The idea of one trying to assimilate into groups made Ali often think about the quote “ either choose not to make friends with elephant drivers, or build a house fit for an elephant” because he himself was struggling with the issue. This quote basically implies how one should not be stuck in the middle but should either choose one side (example: white/black vs. grey). However, this was an issue that Ali himself had to deal with because he had two sets of friends: the “mullahs and pious businessmen” and the “secularized professors”. The “mullahs and pious businessmen” viewed Ali to be an outstanding scholar “with ties to the leading men of Qom” whereas the professors saw Ali to be a liberal mullah. Ali never fully “remodeled
