Objectives Week 15 1. Know how rotation curves for galaxies and dynamics of galaxy clusters both contributed to the need for a dark matter hypothesis. 2. Understand why normal matter is insufficient to account for galaxy rotation curves and galaxy cluster dynamics. 3. Know what MACHOs and WIMPs are and why they were postulated. 4. Know about the dark matter candidates postulated from supersymmetry and weak force asymmetry. 5. Understand the basic tenet of the MOND hypothesis. 6. Know the role of the WMAP mission in determining the mass-energy density and geometry of the universe. 7. Know the role of Type 1a supernovae in the development of the dark matter hypothesis. 8. Know the basic properties of dark energy. 9. Know the alternatives to dark energy that some scientists feels can explain the type 1a supernova observations. 10. Know the ultimate fates of the universe depending upon specific properties and evolution of dark energy. Week 16
