1 Morphology II October 31, 2011 Today… Morphology Recap Morphology: The study of word structure & word formation The lexicon The lexicon (very briefly) The words of one’s language make up its lexicon We can think of the lexicon as a kind of mental dictionary where words are stored linguistic items with unpredictable meanings must be listed in the lexicon (called lexical items) New items are continually being added (e.g. fax machine; facebooking) The lexicon (very briefly) Our knowledge of each word includes several kinds of information such as: How a word is pronounced (e.g. /slip/) What it means The grammatical context in which a word can be used Defining “word” How would you define “word”? It’s harder than it looks!

2 Defining “word” Why is word hard to define? The term "word" is ambiguous in common usage dog vs. dogs (1) they are different words (they can't generally be used in the same sentences exactly the same way) (2) These two are the same word (they are both nouns that refer to the same kind of animal, differing only in number) Defining “word” lexeme: “word” as an abstract grammatical entity, represented concretely by one or more different inflected word forms according to grammatical context inflected = with “inflectional morphology,” like “plural” or “past tense” Defining “word” lexeme: “word” as an abstract grammatical entity, represented concretely by one or more different inflected word forms according to grammatical context dog and dogs are the same lexeme perform, performs, performing, performed are all part of the lexeme PERFORM.
