Chapter 9 . Formal Presentations Being Understood, Accepted, and Remembered Central Points Presentations are an everyday activity in contemporary business. Your goal is to present a clear, compelling, and remembered message: —You should not emphasize delivery and appearance over substance (as advocated by the body language authorities) —You should not become overly enamored with the technical capabilities of presentation hardware and software (as promoted by the computer jockeys) —You should not turn your time at the podium into performance art (as encouraged by the speechwriters). Being Understood Your first obligation is to make certain your presentation can be understood: —Effective use of visuals —Complimentary text and graphics —Effective slide design. Visuals make information “easier to understand, promote interest, improve retention, and allow one to clarify or reinforce points.” To create an effective slide design and to ensure that text and graphical material are complementary, you need to focus attention on purposeful use of design techniques —Color (font, background) —Font (selection, size, case) —Information layout (positioning of text and graphics).
