EXAM 4 Essay: Events & people during the period of time which led up to the civil war. (1848- 1861) Start the essay with the Mexican-American War! MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR -Debate over the boundaries of Texas -Polk sends Slidell on a diplomatic mission to acquire California from Mexico -Knows it won’t work, sends troops led by Taylor to proceed south -When Slidell fails, Polk tells Taylor to proceed further south (Beyond the Mexican recognized border) -1845: Mexico attacks, Americans are killed, Congress declares war -End of 1847: War is over, treaty negotiations -Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo favors USA, 1848 -Ceded AZ, NM, UT, CA to the US -Mexico accepts Rio Grande as border, gives up claim to TX -US agrees to pay Mexico $15 million -Costly in $$$ and casualties -Served as training for military leader who would take part in the civil war -Gave us LOTS of territory, gave it a national outline -Raised the question of slavery in the new states A HOUSE DIVIDING I. Rise of Anti-Slavery Reform -Northern radicals begin to voice intense opposition to slavery -William Henry Harisson: begins 2 abolitionist societies
