(1919) editor of S. newspaper ‘Avanti!’ -Italian government too liberal, too democratic, too weak -poet D’Annuncio has taken Fiumé with 2,000 military volunteers -for a full year they hold off Italian governmental forces -Mussolini is impressed: tries to emulate D’Annuncio -blackshirts & Roman salute (fist) -switches to Fascism; becomes conservative to get more followers -calls himself “champion of big business” MARCH ON ROME
