ME 326-Homework Assignment #6 Due: 12 October 2011 Topic: First Law-Open Systems, SSSF Problems Text: Chapter 4.2-4.5 Problem #1: A pump accepts liquid water at 70 °F and 14.7 psia and compresses it isothermally to 1500 psia. The pump has a constant power input of 15 hp and may be assumed to be adiabatic. Using the 1 st Law for SSSF system and neglecting potential and kinetic energy of the water, a) develop an expression for the mass flow rate of water through the pump involving only the pump power and the thermodynamic properties of the water, b) determine the mass flow rate of water (lb m /s) and c) volume flow rate of water (ft 3 /s). Problem #2: Air enters a compressor at 77 °F and 14.7 psia and at a volumetric flow rate of 35 ft 3 /s. The air is compressed such that the outlet conditions are 1030 °F and 300 psia. For this device determine: a) mass flow rate of air through the compressor (lb m /s), b) the change in specific enthalpy of the air from inlet to outlet (Btu/lb m ), c) the power
