Ethan Chen CM 350 Oct. 18, 2011 Culture of Taiwan Hundreds of years ago, people from the west were very interested about the mysterious world of the east. It was widely believed that the eastern world was a paradise full of gold and spices. In the 15 th century, many European countries sent out countless ships in hope of exploring the unknown frontier. One day, a group of exhausted Portugal explores slowly approached the other side of the horizon. After wandering on the ocean for months, these people were desperately looking for land. When they were about to give up, a tiny angular figure suddenly emerged on the skyline. An outburst of cheering and whistling filled the whole ship. They eagerly navigated toward the mysterious figure. To their astonishment, a gorgeous island appeared in their sight. The mountains were magnificent that reached to the azure sky, and the luxurious forests covered all the hills. The trees were so green and full of vitality. As the breeze passed through, the leaves twinkled under the sunshine with numerous golden sparkles. One sailor was overwhelmed by the breathtaking scene and shouted, “IIha Formosa!” the “beautiful
