Abnormal behavior results from an attempt to avoid painful feelings. Indications Clients with anxiety, phobias, substance abuse, addictive disorders, & bipolar disorder. Outcomes/Evaluation Clients behavior improves after using each of the different types of therapies: Modeling, operant conditioning, systematic desensitization, & aversion therapy. Potential Complications The client doesn't respond to behavioral therapy. Compulsive behavior doesn't stop. Panic/Anxiety worsens. ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Assess the client's behavior. Reward the client for good behavior. Pair maladaptive behavior with a punishment or unpleasant stimuli to promote a change in behavior. Client Education Diaphragmatic breathing for a client having a panic attack. When negative thoughts occur, the client can say "stop" and substitute those negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Nursing Interventions Reassess the client.
