According to an article published by Kelsey McKinney, the story must be set in a realistic environment with magical elements; indeed, part of the draw of magical realism is that it blurs the line between realistic fiction and fantasy (2014). Gabriel Garcia Marquez is considered one of the best representatives of magic realism literature in Latin America. By the time One Hundred Years of Solitudewas published, Latin American novelists such as García Márquez had begun to enjoy worldwide recognition for their writing, in part, because of their use of magical realism (Pelayo, 2001).
