REHABILITATION FOR JUVENILES 2 Abstract The issue of juvenile rehabilitation is one that has been present in the world of juvenile justice for a while now. There are many people who believe that juvenile offenders can be rehabilitated while there are some others who think that while some can be rehabilitated not all are willing to accept the attempts to help them improve their behavior. The following paper presents research supporting the idea that juveniles can be rehabilitated, along with a survey conducted that also has a majority support of giving juveniles a second chance. There are articles from peer review journals that support this idea and there are newspaper articles from the past five years presenting the publics opinion on the juvenile justce system and how it is treating juveniles. The overall results from the research presented conclueded that the public is generally in support of rehabilitating juveniles and improving the juvenile justice system as a whole when it comes to the treatment of juveniles. Keywords : juveniles, second chance, rehabilitation Rehabilitation for Juveniles One mistake should not define the rest of a youths life. This is the idea behind rehabilitation within the juvenile justice system. Juvenile justice is a big part of the justice system today and needs to be acknowledged as such. The youths within the juvenile justice system deserve the chance to turn their lives around. The publics view of giving juveniles a second chance is positive and in favor of the idea. REHABILITATION FOR JUVENILES 3 how the juvenile justice system is being run today are both in support of changing the system and making it more focused on rehabilitating rather than punishing. Rehabilitation is an important aspect of juvenile justice, it needs to be paired with punishment but still needs to be incorporated. Juvenile offenders are young and still have a chance to change. Due to how young juvenile offenders are they still have time to change their ways and to get their lives straight. In the article Juvenile Justice: Time for a Decision (1975) the author wrote,“The argument for these expenditures, is of course, that children and young people are more prone to rehabilitation than adults. That if we can stop a child from treading a wayward path, we can divert him from a consistent pattern of crime for the rest of his life” (p. 2). Juveniles have a chance to turn their lives around and shold be given the chance to prove themselves and have a second chance at a normal life. While most people support giving juveniles a second chance, some believe that juveniles should be punished and not given a chance at rehabilitation. In the article written by Allen, Trzcunski and Kubiak (2012) they said, “we found strong support for our basic hypothesis that
