Evaluation Paper 10-20-09 Timothy McGimpsey What is considered a “good job”? Some would say a job that pays well, some would say a job that you enjoy, some may say a job that makes a (positive) difference in the world or at least your local community, and some may even say a job that’s important, something people can’t or won’t live without. Let’s use all four of these points as our criteria for a good job. First let’s discuss the salary of a job. Kayne West (Famous Rapper/Songwriter) say’s in the song “Good Life” “having moneys not everything, not having it is” this opinion is usually agreed with because the simple fact of life is; you need financial income (of some sort) to live in modern day society. So what is considered a good paying job? Well the answer depends on cost of living where you live. Just to help give you an idea of what you may consider what a well paying job is, take a look at these statistics. According to the US Census Bureau the following are income quintiles (each is 20% of the population) Bottom 20%: $0 - 17,984 (3.4% of the income) Lower Middle 20%: $17,985 - 34,000 (8.7% of the income) Middle 20% $34,001 - 54,453 1

Middle class would be considered good to the general public. So whatever job we discuss, it must pay over $34,001 in order to fit within our criteria. The second question we must ask is, what is considered an enjoyable job? The enjoy ability of a job is solely based upon personal opinions and preferences. (For Example) if you enjoy public speaking and have good social skills, then you may not enjoy working on a line in a glove factory, however, if you do not enjoy public speaking and do not have good social skill than working on a line in a glove factory may be an enjoyable job for you. Quite simply, it’s the employee’s preference. There is no one discernible qualification for an enjoyable job. Just do what you like! Thirdly, the job must be able to make a (positive) difference of some kind in the world or at least in the local community. Now whether that difference is on a personal level or professional level, it must affect the local community, which in turn will affect 2

However, wanting to affect your surroundings moves us right along to our fourth and last part of our criteria for “what is considered a good job?” Lastly, what is an important job? Everyone wants to be important at some point in his or her life, and it is common knowledge that every job, career, or occupational position is important, and every person that fills that job, career, or occupational position is important. One of those important jobs that seem to fit within all of the criteria is being
