Lecture 21- Student Homeless Challenge Project Marking the Ability to Successfully Survive the Harsh Conditions of Life on the Streets One of the earliest individuals to take the homeless challenge was George Orwell who wrote of his experiences in Down and Out in Paris and London published in 1933 Homeless Challenge experiences were common in the 1960s with the advent of the War on Poverty Many religious leaders initiated Homeless Challenges in large cities to familiarize themselves and their “parishioners” with the plight of the disadvantaged Homeless Challenge: When economically-privileged people dress down, empty their wallets, and spent time on the streets as homeless people National Coalition for the Homeless wants people to do this so they will be able to know how it feels to be without a home o Participants will come away with a better understanding of the scope of the problem, and of how the system currently deals with the hardships of homelessness o They will be better able to address solutions at the local level when they have
