Pat Herlihy RH 101 Vandenberg Promoting Marriage as a Means for Promoting Fatherhood Increased number of children living in fatherless households. In 1960, less than 10 million. Today, close to 25 million. More than 1/3 of all children. 75 percent will experience poverty before 11 years old. Children without a father in the home are more likely to be suspended or expelled. “When fatherhood falters, children suffer” Just because a father pays child care, doesn’t make the situation any better. Children with fathers who are social with them do better in health and education. Fathers that only visit turn into “treat dads”. Cohabitation is getting more recognized. Nearly half of children will live in a cohabitated home before the age of 16. Cohabitation is a weak family form. High chance that the family will break up and live in poverty. 63% of children live in a cohabitation household where the father is not theirs.
