Pat Herlihy Music, Philosophy, and Generation Y “Is there such thing as an evil sound?” Stated by Kevin Max, a young musician at a lecture in Nashville Cut to the heart of ancient views of music It respects the power of music Music has the power to soothe, or to create brutality Ancients sought to control the effects of music Plato taught that too much music confuses the mind The switch to polyphony gave birth to the glories of western music No sound by itself is evil It matters how the sound is employed American popular music has not always been vile Music became transformed Live in a culture very skilled at using sound to create evil effects Soundtracks for example like Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers Every kind of audience has its vices Studying Heavy Metal: The Bricolage of Culture Popular belief is that heavy metal music is no more than a bunch of noise Heavy metal is based off of hatred, or devil music
