ID I T W ORK ?: D ATA A NALYSIS B ASICS This handout is designed to help you complete your Data Analysis Worksheet, which will be important in enabling your group to complete its final scholarly paper. Follow the steps below to calculate all of the results that you will need for the project. ** You will only have to enter data and/or edit formulas in cells that are colored in light green. If a cell is not light green, you should not change it in any way. ** Input your data: Step 1: In the Data Analysis Excel File (provided on Compass) enter the variable names for 1) your group’s chosen form of psychopathology, and 2) your group’s other topic of interest into cells D21 and E21, respectively. Enter them also into H3 and H4, respectively. Step 2: Copy the Age, Gender, and Ethnicity data from the Master File and paste it into the Data Analysis Excel File, starting at A22, B22, and C22, respectively. Step 3: Copy the data for the 2 variables you need to test your hypothesis from the Abnormal Psychology Project Master File and paste it into the Data Analysis Excel File, starting at cells D22 and E22. “Clean” your data: Step 4: Scroll down through your data and delete any rows for which you do not have numbers for one or more of your variables (age, gender, ethnicity, psychopathology, other measure). In other words, if a row is missing a score for your psychopathology measure, delete that row. **Now your data only contains usable cases.** Calculate the mean and standard deviation for Age: Step 5: Click on cell J2 and then click into the formula bar so that you can edit it. To start with, this formula will read: =AVERAGE(A22:A41) Edit the formula so that it includes all of your data For example, if your last row of data is row #250, your new formula should look like this: =AVERAGE(A22:A250) Cell J2 now contains your Age mean. Step 6: Click on cell L2 and then click into the formula bar so that you can edit it. To start with, this formula will read: =STDEV(A22:A41) Edit the formula so that it includes all of your data For example, if your last row of data is row #250, your new formula should look like this: =STDEV(A22:A250) Cell L2 now contains your Age standard deviation. Step 7: Do the same for the cells created for calculating means and standard deviations for your two measures of interest. Cells J3 and L3 now have the mean and standard deviation (respectively) for
