Classroom Norms When teaching for understanding there is an assumption that stud ents possess prior knowledge. students can apply that prior knowledge to learn something new. problem solving provides opportunities to connect old and new knowledge. Related classroom norms: There is value in discussing alternative strategies Students should be able to articulate their ideas. Students should be able to explain the underlying mathematical concepts in their solutions.
