Introduction and goals: The behavior of a clocked sequential circuit is determined by its inputs, outputs, and current state of its flip-flops Our goal is to tabulate a time sequence of the circuits inputs, outputs, and internal states Our approach (given a circuit): 1. Determine the circuits State Equations/Flip-flop input equations . 2. Using the state equations/flip-flop input equations and the flip- flops characteristic table generate a State Table . 3. Using the information from the state table generate a State Diagram .

Definitions: State Equations: Algebraic equations that specify the next state Q (t + 1) as a function of the current state and inputs. State Table: A tabulated representation of the time sequence of inputs, outputs, and flip-flop states. State Diagram: A graphical representation of the information contained in the state table.
